Institute Scholars Program
Institute Scholars Program
Since its founding in 1839, the Virginia Military Institute has recognized and rewarded
academic achievement. Today, approximately 35 cadets attend VMI on full academic
scholarships while many others receive partial scholarships in recognition of their
academic achievements.
The purpose of the Institute Scholars Program is to attract academically talented
students who are leaders in their high schools. Candidates must demonstrate a
well-balanced high school background, to include athletics and leadership roles. Financial
need is not a criterion for selection.
Scholars are expected to maintain high academic and personal standards while striving
to attain leadership positions in the Corps of Cadets. Scholarships are renewable each
year for four years, subject to satisfactory performance by the cadet and annual review by
the selection committee.
High school guidance counselors and VMI alumni are encouraged to bring this program to
the attention of promising students who have excellent credentials and the potential to
become leaders at VMI.

Scholarship Benefits
When a recipient receives a full scholarship under the Institute Scholars Program, all
costs of a cadetship are met by the scholarship. In addition, a generous allowance is
deposited in the recipient's account to cover the purchase of books and incidental fees.
The Institute Scholar may study abroad for an academic semester or year, and the costs
of study will be covered up to the value of the scholar's award. When possible, intense
language studies at Middlebury College are also funded through the scholarship.
To retain their Institute scholarship, cadets must maintain a grade point average of
3.0. However, VMI scholars have set personal goals of a 3.5 GPA, thus achieving academic
distinction and the privilege of wearing academic stars on their uniforms.
